Gael W. Elmer
SOUTH OGDEN – Gael Winfield Elmer, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at age 82 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born October 12, 1924 in Delta, Utah to Carl and Cree Underhill Elmer. Gael’s family moved from Delta to Milford, Utah where he graduated from high school. He received a scholarship to Utah State Agriculture College. He also attended Washington State University at Pullman.
A veteran of World War II, he served in Italy with the 15th Air Force where he flew B-17 bombing missions over Central Europe. On his 13th mission, his plane was lost when hit by enemy fire over Hungary. He became a prisoner of war and was liberated from Stalag No. 74, Mooseburg, Germany on April 29, 1945, by General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Organization and the Order of the Purple Heart.
He married Doris L. Terry on June 19, 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Milford, Utah; Springville, Utah; and Greeley, Colorado before moving to Washington Terrace in 1965 and South Ogden in 1998.
Gael was a self employed Farmer, Salesman, worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and retired from Hill Air Force Base.
He was active in the LDS Church, serving as Bishop, Bishop’s Counselor, Ward Clerk, High Priest Group Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Ward Choir Director, Stake 70’s Leader, Local Missionary and Temple Ordinance Worker. He had an amazing tenor voice and sang solos for many functions.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of 62 years, brother D. Q. (Alice) Elmer of St. George, Utah; his six children: Lawrence J. (Linda) Elmer of Layton, Utah; Susan (Gary) Guernsey of Menifee, California; Scott (Anita) Elmer of Ogden, Utah; Christine (Dennis) Pearson of Foothill Ranch, California; Melanie (Roger) Butler of South Weber, Utah; Lisa (Jon) Schneiter of West Point, Utah; his 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
His parents and brother Shirley Dean Elmer preceded him in death.
The family would like to express their profound gratitude for all the loving care given to Gael from Manor Care of South Ogden, Harmony Hospice, Hospice of Utah, Dr. Peter Clemens and Dr. Gary Holland.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 25, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Washington Terrace 9th Ward Chapel, 125 East 5350 South.
Friends and family may call at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Sunday, June 24, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday at the Ward Chapel from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., where Military Honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
