Garnett Vernon “Joe” Goss
9/13/1920-3/28/14
Joe, 93, was called home to his Heavenly Father on March 28, 2014. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
He was born on September 13, 1920, to Lyda Goss and Etta Cornett Goss, in Meadow Grove, Neb. He was raised in Bridal Creek, Virginia. Joe served in the US Navy from 1939-1945, during WWII, where he ran Higgins boats and landed Gen. George Patton and his troops during Operation Torch in Casablanca, North Africa. He also served in the Pacific Theater. One of his proudest moments later in his life, was being chosen by the Honor Flight Network to be flown to Washington D.C., where they honor America's veterans for all of their sacrifices.
Joe married Norma K. Swan Goss in 1946, and later divorced. Together they were blessed with eight children. He remarried in 1979, to Joan S. Mann and remained happily married until his death. He retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad as a brakeman/conductor. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the El Kahala Shrine.
He and Joan enjoyed traveling extensively across the U.S., they frequently wintered in Yuma, AZ, and he was an avid gardener and was known for his amazing tomatoes. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be truly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; children: Kathryn (Leonard) Briggs, Sandra Ropelato, Diana (Pat) Foley, Bill (Kathy) Goss, Gaylene Opheikens, Pamela Jones, Kelly (Cheri) Goss, and Rob (Misty) Goss; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, brothers: Tom Goss, Breece Goss, Wiley Goss, and sisters: Edi Lee, Wanda Woodro and Louise Jones.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents and brother Jack and sister Mildred.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 am at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Salt Lake City Shiners Hospital.
Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
