Gary Earl Elliott

March 21, 1938 — October 25, 2023

Gary Earl Elliott, 85, a long-time resident of Bear River City, Utah, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2023, at Avamere at Mountain Ridge Senior Care in South Ogden.

The eldest son of James Alma and Myrleen Talbot Elliott, Gary was born March 21, 1938, in Delta, Utah. He grew up attending schools in Lyndall, Willard, and Ogden, graduating from Ben Lomond High School, where Gary served in the Army ROTC program. He served in the United States Army National Guard as a Field Artilleryman beginning in March of 1954 and upon his honorable discharge as a PV2, he remained in the US Army Reserve.

Gary worked for the Union Pacific Railroad on a steel gang prior to joining the United States Navy in March of 1956, serving four years, and being honorably discharged as an EM3 and was promoted to EM2 during his Naval Reserve years, finishing in 1962. His last active-duty station was aboard the USS Ticonderoga, CVA-14.

Gary started his career at Hill Air Force Base in 1959 as an Aircraft Electrician. He moved to Quality Control, retiring as a QC Supervisor in the early 1990s.

He married Sharon Elizabeth Mortensen on July 31, 1974, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were perfect for each other, enjoying over 46 years together until her passing in December of 2020.

Together they made their home in Roy and in Bear River City.

Gary absolutely loved to hunt deer and elk and thoroughly enjoyed fishing. In his younger years he enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing and ALL that that entailed. His life’s passion was being outdoors. He loved to hunt the south slope of the Uintas and Spanish Fork Canyon, and if he thought there was fish somewhere, we were loaded up in the Jeep and on our way. He was a fishing fool.

Gary took impeccable care of his mother, always looking after her. He was an incredible example for all who knew him – he always stood for what was right. Hands down, he was the greatest man we’ve ever known. He will be greatly missed.

Gary is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his sweetheart, Sharon; and by his brothers, Harvey Dee Elliott and William Keith Elliott.

The family thanks the staff at Avamere for the wonderful care they provided Gary, and to Denise Stephens, his nurse with Inspiration Hospice.
