Gary N Howarth, 81 of Layton, Utah passed away on February 6, 2025, peacefully at his home surrounded by family. Gary was born in Ontario, Oregon to Clarence Howarth and Dorothy (Nelson) Howarth. He grew up in Idaho Falls but spent much of his childhood with family members in Magna, Utah. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1961 and then attended the University of Utah where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Following his graduation he got a job with the federal government in San Francisco, California. He would meet his one true love Betty Naylor there. She was born Bradford, Yorkshire, England. She emigrated to the United States in New York. She later moved to San Francisco where Gary and Betty met. For the rest of their lives San Fransico remained a special place for them and they often vacationed there.
Gary and Betty were married in the Salt Lake City LDS temple on October 7, 1966. Gary was an active and involved member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings throughout the years and cherished all the friendships he made throughout his callings.
Gary worked in many different agencies within Utah State Government over the years. He worked in total for over 50 years. He knew more than most about medical collections and taught others who would take over his position before retiring in December 2016. He was hardworking and dedicated and only truly retired because of his Parkinson’s Diagnosis 6 months earlier.
Gary was a talented artist but never had the courage to display his many different styles of art. It was something he kept doing right up until the end of his life. He was kind, forgiving, and had a quiet biting sarcasm that kept his kids laughing. He kept his daughter laughing with his biting humor through the end.
Gary is survived by sons David Howarth, Redwood City, CA; Steven (Kathleen) Howarth, Nampa, ID; Trevor (Lillian) Howarth, Salt Lake City, UT; daughter Jennifer (Dallin) Baxter, Layton, UT; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; sisters Judy (Tim) McKinlay, Magna, UT; Kathy (Mark) Wilcox, Magna, UT, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, his parents, aunts, and uncles.
