Gary Edward Reed, devoted father, grandfather, and husband was reunited with his wife and parents on June 17, 2023 after complications from a car accident. Everyone who knew Gary knew his fun and wonderful personality and the strong testimony of the restored gospel he possessed.
Gary was born on July 31, 1943, in Salt Lake City to Edward Seth Reed and Norma Thomas Reed. He grew up in Popular Grove eventually graduating from West High School. After a two-year LDS mission to the South Australian Mission, he graduated from the University of Utah. He also spent part of his youth serving in the Army Reserve. Eventually he went on to receive a master’s degree from Brigham Young University.
He met the love of his life, Marilyn Olsen, and was married for time and all eternity on November 25, 1980. He and Marilyn were sealed by his mission president Bruce R. McConkie. Marilyn paved the way for their reunion by passing in 2009. They loved to go on adventures traveling all over the world, including several times to his beloved Australia. The last few years of his life he was married to Janet Muhn with whom he also enjoyed traveling.
Education was at the center of Gary’s life. He was a teacher for 50 years, first as an LDS seminary teacher, then as a marketing/business/psychology teacher, and then finally transitioned to be a Jr. High counselor. In addition to more than 30 years in the public school system with Davis School District, he also was particularly proud of his work at Columbus teaching special needs students’ vocational skills as well as several decades as an adjunct psychology professor at the University of Utah, SLCC, and the BYU Salt Lake Center.
Gary’s other passion was cars. He owned several classic vehicles but also bought and sold cars for more than 50 years. Never looking for profit Gary was known to say, “I’m looking to make friends, not money.”
Service was a strong part of Gary’s life. He served in many church callings including a bishopric and elders quorum presidencies. He was a charter member and president of the South Davis Kiwanis Club. In particular, he was proud to raise thousands of dollars for local charities.
Gary’s life was about relationships. From teaching to cars to church to family, being around and enjoying people is what brought him joy, especially his annual birthday fishing trip with grandchildren. He was known for his storytelling and his unique laugh. He brought joy to everyone who knew and loved him whether it was a quick joke or story (sometimes inappropriate), or whether in some other way Gary made others smile. He will be missed but his impact will last for eternity.
He is survived by his children Kyle E. (Julie) Reed, Cari Lyn (Jordan) Morrow, and Curtis G. (Kelsey) Reed, 12 grandchildren; and his recent wife Janet Muhn; he is also survived by his sister Carol and brother Darrell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Utah.
