Gene Otello Miconi
OGDEN a" On October 18, 2008, we lost our father, Gene O. Miconi. He had suffered with Alzheimer''s disease for years and finally was released from its grip on Saturday night while surrounded by his loving family.
Gene was born, Otello Miconi, in Rome, Italy on March 27, 1919, a son of Alfredo and Corinna Rossi Miconi. He was drafted into the Italian Army in 1939. After spending two years near the Italian-French border, his regiment was sent to North Africa. Following his capture by Australian soldiers at Tobruk, he was transferred to American custody. He spent nine months as a P.O.W. in Egypt and another nine months in South Africa before reaching the United States. Gene was sent to the Ogden Depot in November 1943 where he met the love of his life, Iola Olsen. They were married on November 26, 1945 and together were the proud parents of three sons.
Gene has always been known as a dedicated craftsman. He put these skills to work and established Miconi Tile in 1952. Many of you reading this probably have tile in your home that he installed. His legacy remains through his children and theirs, who continue to keep the family name and reputation strong. All who have trained under his watchful eye can remember his attention to detail and expectation of excellence. His influence has no doubt reached many lives, whether it was simply a nicer bathroom or as complex as a much better way of life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Iola, his three sons, Gene H. (Nancy), Dennis (Peggy) and David (Cyndee), two brothers, Renato (Luigina) and Armando (Egle) and sister, Marisa (Remo). Gene has nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Graziosa, brother, Mario and grandson, Nate. We have no doubt he is in heaven with his grandson, Nate, sitting down to a big plate of pasta.
The family would like to thank the staff at Manor Care/Cambridge Unit for all the loving care given to our father, especially his CNA''s Rosa and Marvila. Special thanks to Vista Care Hospice for the wonderful, tender care they provided Gene the last several years. We are forever indebted to his caregivers.
Memorial Mass will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1100 East 5550 South with Father Patrick H. Elliott officiating.
Friends may call at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. where Holy Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to either the Alzheimer''s Association in Gene''s memory, or Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund.
