Genette Gladwell Buck

1936 ~ 2021

Our beloved Mother and Grandmother, 85, North Ogden, passed away on Sunday morning, December 19, 2021, at the McKay-Dee Hospital.

Genette was the first of five children born to Donald Pearcey Gladwell, Sr., and Loretta Marie (White) Gladwell, June 16, 1936, at Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah. Both of her parents’ families came to Utah as Mormon Pioneers. She had a happy childhood and was very close to her paternal grandfather, Alfred Gladwell. She often talked about the things she learned from him, and you could tell she loved him dearly. She attended Ogden High School her sophomore and junior year. She attended the new Ben Lomond High School her senior year of high school; graduating class of 1954.

Genette married Cameron Douglas Buck on December 23, 1953, while on military leave.  Genette’s paternal grandfather, Judge Alfred Gladwell, performed the ceremony for the young couple. She completed her senior year and joined Cameron in California at Camp Pendleton Naval-Marine Base in San Diego. They shared amazing adventures together, bringing seven children into the world, and adopting two more to complete their family.  Genette devoted her entire life to her family. She was an amazing mother. Cameron’s work required him to travel often, and he was attending Weber State College to complete his degree in Physics. During these times, she would find herself wrangling their six teenagers while caring for their 3-year-old toddler, and their newborn twin boys all by herself.

As a young mother, Genette’s children would hurry home from school to see what she was making in the kitchen. Opening the door and smelling fresh baked cookies was a real treat. She made homemade bread a couple of times a week. It was heavenly to have fresh hot bread with melting butter and her homemade strawberry jam.

Genette was an accomplished seamstress. She sewed all the clothing for her children, husband, and herself on a SINGER Treadle sewing machine. It was amazing to watch her skill using this machine. She created many items for fundraisers for her church. She even made doll clothes. She eventually saved up and bought herself an electric sewing machine. She was excited about all the things it could do.

Genette joined the sisters in her ward and learned how to decorate cakes. Together, they raised money for the new church building for their ward. In another ward, she taught the young women in her MIA Class to decorate cakes to raise money for their new church building there. Throughout the years, she made beautiful wedding cakes for family members and friends. Her work was beautiful as she paid close attention to detail. She had fun teaching her passion to her daughters and granddaughters. Oh, the memories she made with those she loved so dearly.

Genette crocheted beautiful doilies, blankets, and hot pads. Her work was an inspiration. She was very discouraged when her stroke in 2018 took the mobility from her skillful hands.

Genette believed in being self-sufficient and always had a garden. Her green thumb provided plenty for her family and friends. The grandchildren still talk about going to Grandma’s house and picking the raspberries and blackberries; climbing the tree and eating apricots, eating summer apples before they are ready or eating too many cherries and having a tummy ache. Along with a garden comes canning peaches and making jam.

Genette had a strong testimony of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and stood firm in her belief all the days of her life. She read her scriptures daily and found peace and comfort in their power. She served in various callings in her church during her life and was always willing to serve the Lord.

Genette was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Pearcey Gladwell, Sr., and Loretta Marie (White) Gladwell; her loving and eternal companion, Cameron Douglas Buck; sister, Marcia Newell; daughter, Katharin Kitima Bulleit; San Diego, CA; and granddaughter, Cecilia Aspen Buck.

She is survived by three sons, Douglas C. Buck, Perry, UT;  Samuel D. (Molly) Buck, North Ogden, UT; Paul D. (Crystal) Buck, North Ogden, UT; five daughters, Hollie J. (John) Copeland, Ehrhardt, SC; Christine C. Lemon, West Haven, UT; Barbara K. (Robert) Farmelo, Palmdale, CA; Susan M. (Mark) Rutledge, Whidbey Island, WA; and Laurie A. Sibbett, Grove City, OH; son-in-law, Jacques Bulleit, San Diego, CA; 28 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.  She is also survived by two sisters, Virginia (Boyd) Jones, North Ogden, UT; Jeraldine (Kent) Sales, Lawson, MO; brother, Donald Pearcey Gladwell, Jr., Ogden, UT; brother-in-law, David Thomas Buck of Tooele, UT; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
