George D. Fish, Jr.
NORTH OGDEN - George Fish, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed from this life on April 10, 2009. He was born January 23, 1928 on a farm in Baker County, Florida, the fourth child of Verdie Rhoden and George D. Fish, Sr.
He was an Army veteran of WW II and served in Okinawa and the Philippine Islands. During the Korean Conflict he served as an Army Intelligence officer at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He attended business college in Jacksonville, Florida and was employed with AT&T for 36 years in Jacksonville and Miami.
On March 31, 1956, he became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had many opportunities to serve in an area where the Church was growing rapidly. He loved his assignments as teacher, home teacher, Bishop of the Hollywood, Florida Ward, and high councilman in the South Florida Stake. He was devoted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and remained a faithful home teacher until last year when ill health made it impossible to continue.
On leave from the Army he met the lovely Marjorie E. Burnett at the Blue Haven Drive-Inn in Macclenny, Florida and they were married at her family home in Sanderson on June 4, 1950. They later worked and sacrificed and made the long trip to Utah in a Volkswagon van where they were sealed with their three children in the Salt Lake Temple on June 18, 1968. His family was his pride and joy and he spent his life working and sacrificing so that they were well cared for and supported in education, missions, and marriages.
His hobbies included wood working, gardening, fishing, traveling, and sports. He had a meticulously cared for yard and garden and loved sharing the things he grew with family and neighbors. His early years on the farm ingrained in him love and respect for the earth and its natural processes. He loved nothing better than spending a day (or several) fishing with his two sons in the creeks, lakes, and oceans in Florida and coming home with a large string of fish for a family "fish fry". His hushpuppies were legendary! After retiring and moving to Utah to be with their three children, George, Marge, and their little poodle, Sam, spent many happy hours traveling through this great land. They visited all 50 states and particularly enjoyed visiting Mormon historical sites.
He is survived by his eternal companion, Marjorie; his little dog, Bouncer; one daughter, Linda Anderson, North Ogden, UT; two sons, Wayne (Debbie), Nephi, UT and Larry (Susan), Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, and 11 great- grandchildren with three more yet to be born. He is also survived by one brother, Drew (Jackie) Apopka, FL; two sisters, Ethel Powell, Lake City, FL, and Clois (Steve) Stafford, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Allen and Karilyn Allred and Hearts for Hospice nurses Sarah and Elaine for their care and concern for our father.
