George Hanson

George Lewis Hanson, 93, passed away January 11, 2018, at his apartment in the Fairfield Assisted Living facility in Layton, Utah, of natural causes.

George was born February 8, 1924, in Ogden, Utah, the son of George Leslie and Emma Olive Bingham Hanson.  He graduated from Boise High School in 1942.  In December 1942 he was drafted into military service in Ogden in this country’s very first 18-year-old draft.  He served in an infantry company in the Illinois 129th Infantry Regiment, which was attached to Ohio’s 37th Infantry Division in the Pacific in the Bougainville, Solomon Islands campaign and in the Luzon, Philippine Islands campaign.  He returned home in December 1945.

He went to Weber College for two years after the war.  He married Sarah Blanche Bird on May 2, 1947, in Ogden, Utah.  They had three daughters.  They lived in Ogden and in Clearfield, Utah.  George became a glazier for Bennett’s Glass and Paint, doing contract construction.  In October 1964 his wife of 17 years passed away.  On December 29, 1973, he married Darlene Naisbitt Rich of Paris, Idaho.  In 1983 he was asked to place the windows, doors, and the glass in the Tahiti Temple.  In 1993 he and Darlene were called to serve in the Australia Melbourne Mission for the LDS Church.

George served in many ward and stake callings, including being the secretary for the Clearfield Stake Farm, a counselor in the Chancellor Branch, serving in the Rocky Mountain Care Center, a camp manager, maintaining and improving the facilities of the Valley View Stake Camp in Liberty, Utah, where he served for 10 years, and as a counselor in the 1st Singles Branch in Clearfield.

Surviving are his wife Darlene, three daughters, Elaine Kreamer, Paso Robles, California; Annette Lee, Birmingham, Alabama; and Lorrie (Charles) Krueger, Kamas, Utah; three step-children, Daniel (Thelma) Rich, Bountiful, Utah; Larry (Dorothy) Rich, Preston, Idaho; Jolene (Randy) Mecham, Pocatello, Idaho; 5 grandchildren, 15 step grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 62 step great grandchildren, and 2 step great great grandchildren.  George was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 15 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road.  Friends may visit with family from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park
