George G. Mahas SLATERVILLE – George Gus Mahas, 84, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009 at his home from cancer. He was born March 18, 1924 in Ogden, a son of Gus and Margaret Littleford Mahas. George married Lucille Hope on January 23, 1944. They were the parents of seven children, Gary (Sharon) Mahas of Malta, ID; Linda Snyder of Roy; Kathy Johnson of Tremonton; Lori Knight of Slaterville; Teresa (Jerry) Anderson of Plain City; Leslie (Ed) Westerman of Roy; 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Lucille passed away on November 9, 1991. George then met his love and soulmate, Janet LaReen Jones and they were married December 5, 1993. This union also gave George two step-daughters, LuWana (Jerry) Day of Hooper and Barbara Clark of Ogden. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force as a Sergeant during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1946. George operated the confectionary from 1952 to 1956 and also the Hermitage in Ogden Canyon from 1972 to 1978. He had been a top salesman and retired from Hinckley Dodge in 1986. George was also a farmer in Slaterville for many years and had animals which he cared for until his death. His last love was the miniature horses of which he had Hall of Famed many times and also received many other national awards. He was a lifetime member and Captain of the Weber County Mounted Sheriffs Posse. Surviving are his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one brother, Bud Mahas. George was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille, his parents, brother, Jim Mahas and his daughter, Janis Mahas. Special thanks to the Weber County Mounted Sheriffs Posse for being a special part of George’s life. Thanks also to Rocky Mountain Hospice for their loving care. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., with Bishop Kim Slater officiating. Friends may call at the mortuary on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., where Military Honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
