“Left early after all.”
Bountiful – When our dear mother traveled from heaven to pick him up, our father, grandfather and great grandfather thought about it awhile then said, “OK.” He didn’t quite make it to the 100 years he was aiming for, but, at 98, he made an admirable attempt.
He was born in northern Utah in 1914 to George Washington Maness and Harriet Celia Ward. Dad was highly inquisitive; he never stopped learning and trying new things. Although life’s circumstances cut his own education short, he continually educated himself and made sure his family lived in an area with good schools.
Dad waited until he was almost 70 to retire. He worked in electronics, building maintenance, heavy-equipment operation and a number of other fields. He was especially proud of his ability to run almost any type of machine, and had his own TV-repair business for a time.
His huge garden was his Eden; a place where he worked tirelessly year in and year out, well into his 90s. He ate healthy before it was popular, except when he didn’t. He often told us, “The whiter the bread, the sooner you’re dead,” while enjoying a bit of fried fat.
Dad loved the Lord; he was fond of telling us how he went astray in his youth but returned to the path he knew he had to take. He served two Stake Missions, was one of the seven Presidents of the Seventy in the Riverside Stake in Salt Lake City, and served as a temple worker. Dad and Mom traveled some in their later years, including a European temple tour and trips to Hawaii.
Married for 63 years to Lorene Kathryn Hoff Maness. Father of G. Raymond, Jr. (Ilene), Glenn (Caroline), Ruth, James (deceased), David, Rose (Stacy), Michael (Alysse), Celia (Randy), and Kathryn (Vince); 18 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.
We give special thanks to Sisi Muti for her patient care in his declining years.
