George E. Marvin

8/16/1921 – 9/27/2014

A life well lived

George Marvin passed away on September 27, 2014 at home with his daughter Susan by his side.

He was born on August 16, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Robert F. and Miriam Marvin.  He spent a remarkable childhood exploring the mines around Alta and American Fork Canyon.  He once lost his light while deep in a mine and his loyal dog Tippy led him out.  At age 13 he bought his own Model T and drove it up and down the avenues until he was caught by his father.  He graduated from West High School and throughout his life he continued to be a self-taught engineer.

In 1942 he joined the Navy and proudly served in WWII as an Aviation Metalsmith First Class.  He received a Good Conduct Medal in the Asiatic-Pacific-Area American Theater Campaign and was honorably discharged in 1945.

He used his GI bill to learn to fly and spent many happy hours in the air over Southern Utah and Lake Mead. When he wasn’t flying he was exploring the area by 4 wheel vehicle. He never met a dirt road he didn’t like. He was especially fond of the Robbers Roost area.  While searching for uranium from the air, his plane went down. His life was saved by a ranch hand of Josie Morris and his fascination with Butch Cassidy was born.

He married Verda Christiansen in 1940 and later divorced. Together they had a daughter Barbara (Gary) Thornock; 5 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He married Phyllis Roberts in 1955. He adopted Michael and together they had Susan (Shane) Monroe; granddaughter Jori Monroe.

Of all his accomplishments he was proudest of his association with the Bountiful City Jeep Posse.  He was an original member starting in 1946. He was a charter member of both the Utah State Search and Rescue and the National Search and Rescue.  He always believed it was important to be part of something meaningful and of use to the community. He truly enjoyed the outings, events, and service projects which involved the Posse.

There will be a gathering at the Bountiful Jeep Posse club house, 250 W. 1050 S. on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 5:45 pm, then a procession to the Bountiful City Cemetery. A light meal will then be served at the Posse Club house. Come and share a remembrance of this remarkable man.     205  -  10 8  Arrangement entrusted to Lindquist Bountiful Mortuary.
