George Gottlieb Ronnenkamp, Jr., age 100, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 2, 2024.
He was born June 11, 1924, at the home of his maternal Grandmother, Laura Harris Craig, in Layton, Utah, to George Gottlieb Ronnenkamp, Sr., and Alta May Craig.
He attended Layton Elementary School and then graduated after four years from Davis High School in 1942. With World War II starting on December 7, 1941, he enlisted for military service after graduation. He was trained and flew as a Flight Engineer, on a B-24 in the China-India-Burma Theater, during World War II. Just prior to going overseas, he married Elaine Flint, on November 7, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple. He received several medals during the war and held the rank of technical sergeant.
Following the war, he went to work for the US Army Rail Division, West Area, Hill Air Force Base, Utah. He started as a diesel mechanic, then diesel foreman, production controller, and retired as the division chief, after 37 years. In addition to his civil service work, he raised livestock, and grew grain and alfalfa on the family farm in Layton.
He served on the Layton City Planning Commission for a number of years. He helped organize the Layton City youth sports program during the 1950’s and was a little league baseball coach for a number of years.
George was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He especially enjoyed serving and teaching the youth. He served in several different callings, including stake missionary, ward Sunday school president, ward Bishop, and a stake Patriarch into his 90’s.
Family activities included yearly trips to Yellowstone National Park, camping in a tent in the Uinta Mountains, snowmobiling, fishing and pheasant hunting. George was also an avid fan of football and baseball, especially the New York Yankees.
George believed in the value and reward of hard work and instilled that value in his children. Work was done first, before there was any play. We were taught that the soil of the land had a special significance to our family.
George was preceded in death by his parents; George Gottlieb Ronnenkamp, Sr. and Alta May Craig; his wife, Elaine Flint; and his siblings: Harris Ronnenkamp, George Ronnenkamp, and Jeanine Ronnenkamp, and a daughter-in-law, Verus Ronnenkamp.
He is survived by his children; Stephen (Janis), Diane, Cheryl Molis, and Susan (Craig) Boatright; 15 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
