Gerald L. Douglass

Gerald L. Douglass passed away Sunday, July 29, 2007, at the age of 83.

He was born in Smithfield Utah on April 9, 1924 to John and Margaret Bingham Douglass. During his youth he delivered coal to "everyone in Smithfield". He graduated from North Cache High School and LDS Seminary. He had a friendly disposition that often started with a "Hi-ya!" and strangers became fast friends with him at many stream-sides, lakes and campgrounds throughout his life. Hunting, fishing and camping were favorite activities that he enjoyed with his family.

As a young man he earned the nickname of "Nugget". It was a widely accepted fact that the name was due to his hard-headedness! But those who truly knew him knew that the few words he spoke often contained "nuggets" of golden wisdom. The name took on new meaning, especially to his family who began to understand his wisdom over time.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He saved his own money to have surgery that made him physically able to serve his country. Following his military service, he was employed as an aircraft mechanic at Hill AFB for 36 years. He was honored to serve on a special detail to work on the U.S. Thunderbirds.

Gerald married Phyllis Sant in Logan, Utah on June 11, 1945. She preceded him in death by just a few months on May 1, 2007. He faithfully and tenderly cared for Phyllis as her health declined. He missed her terribly and looked forward to being with her.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day-Saints. He enjoyed listening to sermons regarding the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Gerald and Phyllis were blessed with great home teachers and neighbors throughout their lives Gerald is survived by his children: Jenalee Wilson, Roy; Kathleen (Larry) West; Joyce (Dennis) Ballard, Murray; Kirk (Annette), Clearfield; Phil (Traci), Hooper; Jeri Lynne, Clearfield. His children, 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren treasure their experiences with him, and will forever be grateful for his sacrifices. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria, of Logan, Utah. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Nolan Wilson, his parents, three brothers and three sisters, and a great-grandson, Bryce Ryan Martin. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist''s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South. Friends and family may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Heritage Park Care Center for their loving care. They also gratefully recognize the many years of care and comfort rendered to Gerald and Phyllis by their youngest daughter, Jeri Lynne. Email condolences to the family at www.lindquistmortuary.com
