On Saturday, July 9, 2011, Dad was lifted from this life and carried on the gentle breezes into the waiting arms of the Savior. He fought the great battle of life with all the strength he possessed, and with great trepidation he laid his fishing pole down and said his final goodbye to all his loved ones. As a mountain man they called him "Many Tales". And as we said our final goodbyes, we know he has been re-united with those that went before him to once again share his "Many Tales".
He was born August 6, 1927 to Albert and Arietta Mitchell in Granger Town Kentucky. Mitch completed his education while serving in the US Navy during World War II. He served as an AO3 on the USS Antietam, and the USS Boxer during the Pacific Conflict. He received the Victory Medal, and the American Area Medal.
Gerald met and married Helen Elaine Gooch and they had five children together. They later divorced. He then married Roberta Lee Massengale. She brought her three children into their marriage Kenneth, Judy, and Jeff Gill, and they became a family. He and his family enjoyed hunting, fishing, and mountain man activities. They also enjoyed camping at the Eagles Campground in Ogden Canyon.
He attended Alpine Church in Riverdale, Utah.
Cooking southern style was one of his favorite pastimes. His specialty included southern fried chicken, biscuits & gravy, and cabbage rolls. His kids were crazy for his chicken and noodles. He was a proud and loving Grandpa who loved his grandchildren and they adored him.
Mitch started his career as a fireman with Engine No 4, in Hammond Indiana, and continued as a fireman at HAFB where he retired. Later he worked for Wal-Mart where he made many friends.
He is survived by his wife Roberta (Bobbie), his brother, Dale Mitchell (Delores) of Griffith Indiana, and by his children and step children; Carol Lynn Lancaster (Jim), Patricia K. Smith (Gary), Geraldine E. Woodruff (Larry), Gary Robert Mitchell (Sandy), Sally J. Odom (Michael), Kenneth D. Gill, Judy L. Yoder (Randy), and Jeffrey R. Gill. He left 22 grandchildren, and 43 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Raymond L. Mitchell (Pauline) of Hammond, Indiana.
The family would especially like to thank the Intermountain Homecare Hospice Team. A very special thanks go to Kenneth Gill for the unfailing, heartfelt care he gave to our Father and Grandfather. Due to his tender and loving care Dad was able to stay in his home to the end. Thanks Kenny.
