Gerry DeRooy
1924 – 2012
Gerarda Matilda “Gerry” DeRooy, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 9, 2012. Gerry was born on September 4, 1924 in Tilburg, The Netherlands to Johanus and Josephine VanderStappen. She eventually met the love of her life, Peter DeRooy, whom she married in 1951. They decided to immigrate to the United States in 1957 where they settled in Ogden, Utah and proceeded to raise five children.
She was an active member of both St. Joseph’s and Holy Family Catholic Church. Through their hard working and efforts, Peter and Gerry were able to provide their children with a fun and loving upbringing. Gerry loved to travel and she loved clothes and fashion. She received her Associate Degree in Interior Design from Weber State College in 1977. Gerry was an avid basketball fan and loved her Utah Jazz.
Gerry is survived by her children Robbie, Rose Laybourne, Janine (Steve) Mann, Anna (Adam) Smith, and Peter (Rachel) and 11 grandchildren that adored their Oma. She is also survived by her siblings Gos (Els) VanderStappen, Anthony VanderStappen and Anna (Peter) DeBeer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter and infant son, Perry.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 24th and Adams. Friends may visit family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road.
