Born in Mainz, Germany, May 6, 1938 - Passed away in Ogden, Utah, July 8, 2019
Gerhard, also known as Gary, immigrated to the United States and lived in New York where he worked in Optics until joining the Army. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas when he met the love of his life, Oralia Ramos. They were married March 8, 1960.
Gary’s profession allowed him and his family to explore the US, living in states from the East coast to the West, and everywhere in between. While living in California they were contacted by missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Soon after listening to the missionary’s message, they were converted and joined the Church. A year later, their family was sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 20th, 1969.
Gary loved to share stories of his childhood growing up in Germany, during World War II. As of late, he had been working on his memoirs writing of his life and adventures.
He enjoyed being a member of the American Legion and has always been a proud patriot!
His favorite past times were dancing, singing, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Oralia Ramos Stracke, his three children, Gloria Baker (Bob), WY; Sylvia Westergard (Allen), TX; Gerhard Stracke Jr. (Stephanie), UT; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, his brother, Hans Rech, who still resides in Germany, and his faithful dog, Dixie.
