Gerrardo (Herold) Oliver Sandoval
Our loving father and grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather Gerrardo (Herold) Oliver Sandoval, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, in Clearfield, Utah. Herold was born in Abiquiu, New Mexico, on July 21, 1929, to Jose Oliver Sandoval and Mercedes Tenorio Sandoval.
Herold was raised by his two grandmothers in New Mexico, before he left home at the young age of 15.
Herold married Ventura Gabaldon Sandoval on December 22, 1948, and he often spoke of his love and devotion to his wife of 73+ years. It wasn’t unusual to find him singing “You are my Sunshine” to her on the back deck or run across little love letters stashed across the house. Herold and Ventura raised their young family in the Old Anchorage and then moved to Sunset, Utah, for 35 years, before moving to East Layton where they made many lifelong friends along the way.
Herold was lucky enough to have two full careers that included being a supply foreman at Hill Air Force Base and finishing his working life as a substance abuse counselor at Davis Behavioral Health. Herold was a friend of “Bill W” and “Dr. Bob” and attended Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings throughout his life. His true love was helping people, so Herold had many friends, and his self-proclaimed mantra was “Born to Serve!” It was difficult to enter any local establishment where he didn’t know someone or had made a friend for life before he left.
Herold lived life to the fullest, and those that knew him well, had the privilege to hear stories about his life that included his young drinking years, growing up in Abiquiu, military service, bowling, boxing, sports, alcoholism recovery, and most importantly the love for his wife and family. Herold had a passionate love of ice cream, coffee, hot dogs, and McDonald’s breakfast, which he affectionately shared with all of his grandchildren. Herold was a very generous man with his money and time, and loved to read religious books, and remained a devoted Roman Catholic and member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Herold is survived by his loving wife Ventura. He was a proud father to six children, Robert (Cris) Sandoval, Mercedes (Andrew) Ocana, Luis (Karen) Sandoval, Louisa (Floyd (deceased)) Trujillo, Michael (Gale) Sandoval, and Michelle (Korey) Hathaway. Herold is also survived by his 7 siblings, Jerry (Helen (deceased)) Sandoval, Cleo Miner, Bea Gallegos Larson, Oliver (Suzanne) Sandoval, Sandra (Toni) Rodarte, Richard (Rita) Sandoval, and Joe D. (Mary) Sandoval. Herold was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, stepmother (Sarah Sabina Sandoval), Father-in-law (Jose Gabaldon), Mother-in-law (Senovia Gabaldon), son-in-law (Floyd Trujillo), and grandson (Chase Sandoval). Herold leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Chancellor Gardens, Visiting Angels, and all the medical staff for their care of Herold over the past few years. Special thanks to Mr. Manuel Trujillo for his visits and providing First Holy Communion, Margarita Cano, Danny Luritta, Stacie Branhall, Gary Michaud, Glenn Hanson, and all his wonderful neighbors that visited and watched over our parents.
