Gilbert "Gil" Luna
Coach Luna passed away at the age of 66 on June 14, 2018 due to complications from a stroke he suffered in 2016. Gilbert's two boys went above and beyond in caring for their father in the last two years of his earthly life.
Gilbert was born July 14th 1951 in Pharr, Texas to Jose and Juliana Luna. He was raised in Layton, Utah where he made many lifetime friends.
Gilbert married Carrie Thomas in 1974 and had three beautiful children: Sheri, Gilbert T "GT" and Todd. In 2002 they lovingly welcomed their granddaughter Dezrea into their home where they raised her from the day she was born. Dezrea was his sidekick, they had a bond that was unlike any other grandfather - granddaughter relationship.
Gilbert loved sports and was well known to the community of Layton where he coached countless little league teams. Before suffering a stroke that limited his abilities you could count on seeing Gilbert at all Layton High sporting events (minus soccer). Gilbert enjoyed golfing and spent many weekends on the course with his boys.
Gilbert was a great coach who made sure you knew you had an important role on the team. His children were often told by someone Gilbert coached that they loved their dad and what an impact he had on their lives.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his mother Juliana Luna Trujillo and stepfather Faustino Trujillo and survived by his wife Carrie Luna, children, Sheri Luna, GT (Krista) Luna, Todd Luna, sister, Maria Luna, brother, Mace (Mary) Palomin, sister, Diana (Manuel) Favila, and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
