Glenn Thomas Clary
1931 ~ 2019
Glenn Thomas Clary born Jan 8, 1931, in Montpelier, Idaho, at his Grandma Bridges home. He was born to Winnifred E. Bridges and Joseph Howell Gunn. He attended schools in Idaho until he was 10 then moved to Ogden to live with his mom and new step-dad, Frank W. Clary. He loved his new dad so much that he legally took the name Clary.
Glenn became interested in police work at a young age. In 1957, he started out life as a fireman and decided that police work was calling his name. He started his law enforcement career with Sunset Police Department and went on to the Davis County Sheriff’s department under Sheriff Ken Hammon. Soon he moved to California and started to work for Orange County Sheriff’s department where he worked for 18 years. He started in Patrol then on to Auto Theft, Homicide and many other divisions in investigation. He retired in 1982 and left California to return home to Utah.
He settled in East Layton and, while building his home, he was approached by Riverdale City attorney, Frank Warner. He interviewed for and was offered the job as Riverdale Police Chief. He happily served as Police Chief in Riverdale for 11 years. He ran for Davis County Sheriff in 1986 and lost his first election. He ran again in 1990 and won and took office as Davis County Sheriff from 1991 to 1995. Glenn opened the new Davis County Jail and then lost the next election. He started working for the Utah State Medical Examiner for the next 10 years which he loved as it kept him in close contact with the local police departments. He retired from the Medical Examiner’s Office in 2015 and this time he really enjoyed his retirement.
He and Donna spent many hours traveling on his motorcycle with former Chief Joe Ritchie and his wife, Jean. We traveled on the motorcycle, in the motor home and cruising through the Panama Canal and other places in the Caribbean. He ended his travels on his new BMW Touring bike.
In 2015, he became ill with Dementia, which he hated because he always took pride in knowing everyone of the 200 plus employees at Davis County by name. It made him mad and frustrated him when he started to be unable to remember people’s names. That really hurt him and made him cry. He served for nearly 50 years.
He leaves behind his wife, Donna, Syracuse, UT, son Jeff Clary (Judy) of La Quinta, CA, daughters Kim Collier of Wilsonville, OR and Heidi Romero, Syracuse, UT and daughter-in-law Jan (Greg) Clary of Hooper, UT, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Frank (Carol), sisters Deanne (Rick Beyer), Sheri Lynn (Frank Warner), son Greg Clary and daughter Robin Leversen. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers & staff at Barrington Place for the 2 ½ years of loving care and Brio Hospice for all their care (esp. Allyson, Amy, Brie, Nicole and Tina).
