Glenn Victor Geilmann, age 93, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on July 5, 2013 after struggling with a brief, painful illness. He was born May 22, 1920 in Del Carbon, Colorado. His parents were Henry J. Geilmann and Inez Hughes Geilmann. Glenn''s family moved to Utah in 1933. He was reared in Wilson Lane and graduated from Weber County Schools. Glenn honorably served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe with the Army Railroad Battalions and honorably served his country the balance of his life.
Glenn married Vera M. Wayment, August 20, 1942 in Warren. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 22, 1946. Three children were born into this union: Bonnie Lee (Ralph) Luby, Ogden; Gregory Glenn, Salt Lake City; and Timothy Paul (Lynette), Ogden; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Glenn is also survived by one brother Ray of Beaverton, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera on September 15, 1989 and his son, Timothy on May 17, 2012; his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Glenn married Evelyn Van Leeuwen Hoogland, whom he loved dearly, on September 26, 1990 in Ogden. Together they enjoyed many wonderful trips to Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, and throughout the United States. He is survived by Evelyn and her children, Sandra (Bill) Descary, Bakersfield, CA; Jake (Ruthann) Hoogland, Washington, D.C.; and Kay Ann, (James) O''Brien, Chicago, IL and five grandsons.
He completed 49 years of his career with the Union Pacific Railroad in Ogden. He was a proud resident of South Ogden and contributed in many ways. He was a member of the first South Ogden Volunteer Fire Department and editor of the "Fire Plug," obtained a generator from HAFB for South Ogden Fire Department for emergency services, helped build the first South Ogden Bowery, chaired the committee to build Park View Elementary, regularly attended South Ogden City Council meetings representing the citizens, served as Park View P.T.A. President and received a national P.T.A. award, built many parade floats over the years and was South Ogden Parade Grand Marshall twice.
Glenn was an advocate for senior citizens. He established the first South Ogden chapter of AARP, remodeled the old South Ogden City Hall for the first Senior Center of South Ogden, distributed food commodities for seniors, served on the Weber-Morgan Senior Citizens Nutrition Council and Weber-Morgan Council on Aging.
He was a member of the Weber County Mosquito Abatement Committee and served on various other committees. He loved serving as a BSA Cub Master for seven years and was a Little League baseball and basketball coach. He was named the 1987 Outstanding Community Volunteer by The Utah League of Cities and Towns and was awarded one of the 1990 National Community Service Awards from the American Association of Retired Persons.
Glenn''s greatest joy was his family and fishing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved working in his flower gardens.
Throughout his life "he went about doing good."
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Immediately following the service, a "Celebration of Life" will be held at the South Ogden Senior Center, 560 39th Street until 5 p.m. Services entrusted to Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
The family would like to thank Hailey, Lissa and the employees from Vista Hospice and caring staff at Manor Care.
