Gordon Cole

January 26, 1936 — February 28, 2018

Gordon Wayne Cole passed away on February 28, 2018 at the age of 82. Gordon did not want a funeral and was cremated on March 12, 2018. Not everybody knew him, but he was an interesting character and needs to have a few good words said about him.

Gordon was born in Wagner, South Dakota on January 26, 1936.

He attended the University of California Berkeley, receiving a bachelor’s degree in finance and received a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Southern California.

He worked in corporate tax affairs and dealt with customers around the world.

His international dealings led to an interest in foreign languages. He learned Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and was learning to speak Portuguese.

He lived in Northern and Southern California, Wyoming, Ohio, and finally moved to Utah.

He was married three times, and had two sons, Robert Gordon Cole (b. 1959) and John William Cole (b. 1963), with his first wife, Marta Graciela  De Leon Batres, who was from Guatemala.

He was in London with his son, John, on September 11 2001, when the terrorist attacks occurred in New York and Washington, and was stranded there for a week until air travel resumed.

He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on September 13 1987 at the age of 51. He considered the Gospel the best thing about his life.

After he moved to Utah, he worked for WalMart, and had many close friends there.

He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He was legally blind and was progressively limited in his ability to walk any distance. He attended a senior yoga class every week to keep active.

He loved reading and keeping up with world affairs. When his vision became limited, he loved being read to, He also listened to CDs of the scriptures and of historic events. He was also active in family history, and loved to attend the temple, although it became increasingly difficult with his physical limitations.

He was active until the day of his death, attending his yoga class on January 27, 2018. His last act was to write his final tithing check.
