Gordon A. Payne
NORTH OGDEN – Gordon Allen Payne, 69, died Sunday, November 23, 2008 at his home.
He was born July 24, 1939, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. He was the fifth child born to Horace and Mable Payne. He graduated from schools in Hill Spring, Alberta, Brigham Young University, and the University of Utah.
Gordon married Mary McGarry of Provo on September 3, 1964, in the Salt Lake Temple by Thomas S. Monson. They built and have lived in their current home since 1969. They have raised nine children in this beautiful surrounding at the base of Mt. Ben Lomond.
Gordon served a mission in the Eastern Canadian Mission under Thomas S. Monson. Since his mission he has been ward or stake young men’s president 22 years. He served as Elder’s quorum president three times, High Priests group leader twice, was a High Councilman, Bishop and home teacher. He was also over the stake welfare farm and sat on the L.D.S. Social Services Board. He has taught various classes and was a temple worker. Since his marriage, they have annually completed the Book of Mormon as a family.
He cut timber in the Wind River and Grey’s River of Wyoming. He did siesmetic work in the Arctic. One year he took 29 men 600 miles across the frozen Arctic. He ended up at Malic Dome which is l,000 miles north of Point Barrow, Alaska. He worked 38 years in the mental health field. Thirty-three years of that was for Weber Human Services. He was noted for his assessment skills. As associate director, he was responsible for many programs including the first JCAH accreditation. He also served on several boards and support groups.
He enjoyed the outdoors and stated; “The feeling you get on top of a mountain can’t be gotten anywhere else.” He hunted in Utah and Canada. He was an avid gardener of vegetables, fruits and flowers. He liked to drive and collected cars and motorcycles. He coached boys and girls sports for 35 years. He loved to read, write and cook.
Family meant everything. Because of our love for each other and for our Savior, we have been obedient to the laws, covenants and ordinances to allow us to be an eternal family. He is survived by his wife, Mary, nine children, Mark (Jean), Marilynne (Troy), Michele (Dan), Michael, Melanie (Rick), Matt (Amanda), Melissa (Eric), Mitchell (Alex), Mason, and fourteen grandchildren, Nathan, Preston, Tyson, Kaitlin, Kierstin, Morgan, Bailey, Brooke, Caleb, Ashton, Tech, Hyde, Logan, and Tyler.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 29, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ben Lomond 11th Ward Chapel, 3610 North 650 East, North Ogden, with Bishop Aaron Hall officiating.
A viewing will be held Friday, November 28, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Ben Lomond 11th Ward Building, 3610 North 650 East, North Ogden.
Burial will follow at the North Ogden Ben Lomond Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
