Gordon Youngman

February 27, 1941 — April 23, 2019

Gordon Kent Youngman, 78, of Layton, Utah, passed away on April 23, 2019 at Chancellor Gardens, lovingly surrounded by his six children, due to complications from Alzheimer’s.

Kent was born on February 27, 1941 in Ogden Utah, to William Vernon and Lenore Evans Youngman, the third of four children.  He was raised and educated in the Ogden area, and graduated from Ben Lomond High School, where he was considered a “Star” athlete in both track and football.  He received a football scholarship to Dixie College.  He served in the Army Reserve National Guard for a short period of time.  He spent his career working at Hill Air Force Base in the plating department and as a Quality Control Specialist.

Kent married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Greenwood, on September 21, 1962, in the Logan Temple.  They raised their six children in Ogden, later moving to East Layton following Kent’s retirement.  Together they enjoyed creating memories with their children and grandchildren through numerous vacations, holiday’s and family parties.  Kent selflessly cared for Sandra as her health struggled for many years prior to her passing away in 2014.  They were married 52 years.

Dad was devoted to his family, caring generously for them, and diligently sacrificing his time and talents to provide for their welfare.  Dad loved all “his babies” tenderly, and he fully supported his children and grandchildren, in all of their various activities throughout the years.

Dad loved to work!  His work ethic was 2nd to none.  He was incredibly skilled with his hands and could fix just about anything.  He was particularly good at finding ways to recreate and repurpose “old stuff.”  He enjoyed painting, and always had an array of work projects going on.  He loved fixing cars, and spent countless hours working on them in his garage. He also used his unique skills to flip several houses, refurbishing them from beginning to end.

Dad loved spending time outdoors.  As a child, he loved his family’s annual summer camping trips to Yellowstone.  He shared this love of the outdoors with his own family, where he helped facilitate many camping and fishing trips.  He also enjoyed working in his yard, where he planted many fruit trees and loved canning in the Fall.  He enjoyed swimming, taking long walks, and visiting with his neighbors.  He also enjoyed attending antique car shows with his sons, grandsons, and brothers.

Dad was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  He attended the temple often and was a devout and dedicated home teacher. Serving others came naturally to him.  He genuinely cared for and quietly acted on the needs of those around him.  He could often be found mowing lawns, shoveling driveways, fixing something, or lending a hand to a widow.  Those who lived near him were blessed to call him “neighbor.”

Kent is by survived by his six children: Lori (Mark) Hendry, Ty (Tami) Youngman, Jamie (Jeff) Hass, Kari (Justin) Knight, Brad Youngman, and Mandy Youngman (Brent Nelson), 15 grandchildren, plus one on the way, and 8 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by one brother, Dale Youngman (Janice), sister-in-laws, Karen Howard and Nancy Greenwood, and brother-in-law, Brent (Sandi) Greenwood.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sandra, his parents, Vernon and Lenore Youngman, two siblings, Lee (Pat) Youngman and Joyce (Vern) Boyce, in-laws, B. H. and Bernice Greenwood, sister in-law Zellrae (Jim) Rhoads, and brother-in-law, Barnard Greenwood.

The family wishes to expresses gratitude to the staff at Chancellor Gardens for their tender care of our Dad.  A special thanks to nurses, Meaghan and Nancy from Legacy Hospice, for their compassionate care towards him during his final days.
