Grant A. Jones PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - Grant Arley Jones, 97, died Sunday, September 7, 2008 in Paradise Valley, Arizona, of natural causes. Grant was born June 25, 1911, in Roy, Utah, the son of Arthur George and Julie May Jones. He married Edris Viola Johnson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1931. They were married for 71 years. Until 1945, Grant and Edris lived in Roy, where Grant farmed or worked at Hill Air Force Base as a civilian. In 1933, their only child, Carlene, was born. In 1945, Grant moved to Nyssa, Oregon, to farm. Later, he farmed in nearby Ontario, Oregon, until he retired. Grant was well known as a careful and productive farmer, earning top-grower honors for two years for his sugar beet crops. The Jones’ also sold pianos and organs for a few years in Ontario. After retirement, Grant and Edris moved to Ogden, where they stayed except for the two years they managed the Trevi Towers condominiums in Salt Lake. During retirement, Grant kept busy doing professional house painting and interior decorating with Edris, who also taught piano and organ. They both gardened and their lovely yard was admired by all. Grant was always active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While in Nyssa, he served as the 2nd Counselor in the Bishopric, Elder’s Quorum President, Sunday School President and was the High Priest Group Leader. He also served in the Mutual presidency and as a High Priest teacher. In 1986, Grant and Edris suffered the loss of Carlene to breast cancer. Carlene was 52. Grant was also preceded in death by Edris, who died at age 89 in 2002, and by his parents and his six brothers and sisters. He is survived by his son-in-law, Jack Atkeson, four granddaughters, Daphne Atkeson, Wendy Harling, Trudy Somers, and Diana Riddick, five great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 13, at 1 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may call at the mortuary on Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Interment, Roy City Cemetery. The family offers deepest gratitude to the staff of IHC Hospice and Home Care in Ogden, who so lovingly cared for Edris until her death and Grant until he moved to Arizona, where the Valley of the Sun Hospice offered compassionate, devoted health care until he passed away.
