“Uncle Grant”
OGDEN – Grant McGill died Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Ogden Regional Medical Center.
Grant was born May 8, 1930, the son of George J. and Nada Alexander McGill. In his early teens, Grant moved with his family to the South Fork area east of Huntsville, Utah where he loved to explore, fish, and hunt in the mountains.
Grant graduated from Valley Junior High, Weber High School and Weber College. He served in the Korean War. Grant retired from the Union Pacific Railroad after 42 years of service as a brakeman and conductor.
Grant married Donna M. Hansen on June 25, 1956. Together they explored Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. They were real geyser watchers. They also spent many hours identifying and enjoying wildflowers.
Grant was a very skillful carpenter and stonemason. With the help of his father-in-law, he built a beautiful log cabin in Sun Ridge. Grant crafted many beautiful gifts from hardwood for family members.
Grant was an active member of the Ogden First Presbyterian Church where he was an ordained elder. He especially enjoyed the Men’s Breakfast and the Issues and Opportunities class. Grant used his carpentry skills to fashion several woodworking pieces for the church.
Grant was an avid bowler and participated on several bowling leagues.
Grant is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Judy (Paul) Geiger; son, Jeff McGill; daughter Debbie (Bryan) Breckenridge; and Andy, his much loved Brittany Spaniel. He is also survived by his brother, Pat E.G. McGill and many nieces who adored Uncle Grant.
A memorial service for Grant will be held at the Ogden First Presbyterian Church, 880 -28th Street on Monday, January 19, at 1 p.m. with The Reverend Dr. Richard P. Minnich officiating.
His family will greet friends at the church on Monday prior to services from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
