Greg David Packard, 68, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, unexpectedly departed this mortal life on September 10, 2016 and returned to his heavenly home.
He was born March 13, 1948 in Provo, Utah to David Condie Packard and Barbara June Harding Packard. He grew up in Provo and Orem and attended Orem High School. As a youth Greg enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and singing in musical performances. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1973 with a degree in Advertising and Communications. During this time he met his sweetheart, Sandra Kaye Wiley. They were married June 7, 1973 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and celebrated 43 years together, welcoming four children into their family and eventually settling in Layton, Utah. Greg and Sandy’s freetime was usually spent together enjoying bicycling, camping, working in the yard, taking road trips, and being with their family. We are grateful for the example of hardwork, dependability, and unconditional love that our dad set for us.
Greg began his professional life as an employee of the JC Penney Company where he worked for 23 years both in Colorado and Utah. Later in his career he was employed as a security clearance background investigator. He worked diligently to provide for his family.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served an LDS mission to Australia and throughout his life he also served in many other callings including assistant scoutmaster, ward clerk, bishopric counselor, teacher, chorister, and volunteering for every Welfare Service Project he was able to do. Greg was always quietly serving others, whether neighbors, friends, or family members. He was a wonderful grandpa who could always be found playing with and entertaining his grandkids at family get togethers. The grandchildren will miss playing chess and wrestling with grandpa and having him chase them around the yard or dancing while Grandpa played the piano.
As hard as he worked, Greg also liked to have fun. He enjoyed bicycling, tennis, reading, studying history and visiting historical sites, traveling, and of course playing a great round of golf.
Greg is survived by his wife Sandy; children: Chris (Liz) Packard; Kelly (Becky) Packard; Erik Packard, all of Layton; Ashlee (Will) Jenson, Rigby, ID; and nine grandchildren with the 10th due anytime. He is also survived by his siblings: Kathleen (Mark) Johnson, Orem; Ryan (Karen) Packard, Bountiful; father-in-law, Richard Wiley, Springville; brothers-in-law, Craig (Joyce) Wiley, Springville; and Brad Wiley, Springville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his mother-in-law, Phyllis Reynolds Wiley.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 15, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Layton Utah Legacy Stake Center, 752 N. 3700 W., Layton. Friends may visit family Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Orem City Cemetery.
We are devastated to have Greg suddenly taken from our lives but find consolation in the hope of being with him in the life after this.
