Gregory Walz Eschler

April 16, 1957 ~ December 16, 2017

Gregory Walz Eschler passed away on December 16, 2017 at the age of 60. Gregory was born in Ogden, Utah on April 16, 1957 to Melvin Jessop and Ruth Adell (Walz) Eschler. Born with spina bifida, Greg’s parents were advised not to get attached to him and put him in a home, advice they happily ignored to the benefit of all who knew him.

Gregory moved with the family to Roseville, California in 1961. The family gradually moved southward spending the longest time in Grand Terrace, California where Gregory graduated from Redlands High School in 1977 and attended San Bernardino Valley College until the family moved back to Utah in 1980. In his younger years, Gregory trained as a weightlifter, working with the then paraplegic world record holder for the bench press and was able to press 300 pounds at his peak.

Gregory worked in a sheltered workshop for several years until he started his own business, The Polished Image, shining shoes in downtown Ogden hotels for nearly 20 years until retiring in 2011. Gregory was proud to have serviced many local and national celebrities and made many friends during his time in business. Greg loved his daytime soap operas, was an avid bowler, and told ever-expanding stories.

Gregory was preceded in death by his father and mother, and one brother, Melvin Jay Eschler. He is survived by two sisters, Eloween Ivey, and  Vicki (Scott) Healy; three brothers, Neale (Kathy) Wooters, Craig (Becky) Eschler, and Vic (Kim) Eschler; tons of nephews and nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, and many girlfriends. Gregory was a beacon of joy, hope, and perseverance to every person he met. He never let his physical limitations stop him and always had a smile for friend and stranger alike.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to EnableUtah in his name.
