Gregory Ray Mortenson
August 20, 1951 ~ March 19, 2018
Gregory Ray Mortenson, our fun and loving Papa, returned to his Heavenly Father on March 19, 2018, after a courageous battle with melanoma.
He was born August 20, 1951 in Ogden Utah to Ray and Jackie Gibbons Mortenson.
Greg enjoyed the outdoors and spent his youth exploring the foothills near his home having many great adventures. He graduated from Ogden High School and attended Weber State University. Greg enjoyed skydiving and made nearly 1,000 jumps. He served in the Army Reserves for six years and was honorably discharged.
Greg married his sweetheart, Carolee Wight, on June 6, 1975. They were sealed in the Ogden Temple on June 9, 1976. Greg's greatest joy in life was his family. He had three children and seven grandchildren.
He enjoyed his work as a technician at the phone company and worked there through the years as the company evolved from Mountain Bell, to US West, to Quest, and then Century Link before retiring in 2001.
Greg was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His service, testimony, and example blessed many people. He especially enjoyed working in the scouting program.
He shared his love of living in and exploring Utah, his beautiful home, with family and friends. He loved backpacking, fishing, and going to the mountain man rendezvous.
Greg was incredibly likable. He was an outgoing "people person." He had a contagious laugh and sense of humor. He had a playfulness and charm that made people gravitate to him. He was always upbeat, jovial, and brave in spite of the many physical challenges he dealt with.
Greg was preceded in death by his father, Ray; his sister, Anne; and his brothers, Paul and Lance. He is survived by this mother, Jackie; his wife, Carolee; his sisters, Nancy (Scott) Hansen, and Louise (Phil) Spencer; his children, Laura (Eric) Lively, Matthew (Angie) Mortenson, and Micah (Melissa) Mortenson; and his seven adorable grandchildren who were the light of his life, Penny, Harper, Tucker, Levi, Joel, Hazel, and Millie.
