Paul Herwit died suddenly and peacefully at his home in Layton, Utah, on February 14, 2017. He was 77 years old at the time of his death.
He was born on April 22, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA to his father Daniel Norman Herwit and mother Grace Herwit.
Paul was a great deep sea fisherman and world traveler. He had a natural gift of music and could sit down and play any song on the piano without sheet music. When he was 12 years old, he won first place on a televised talent show in Los Angeles called Hollywood Opportunity playing Saint Louis Blues in a boogie-woogie style. In the early 60's, he sang and wrote music as part of a musical trio called The Backroom Boys. In his later years, he played the organ for Catholic and Mormon Churches in Salt Lake City, Tooele and Layton. Paul also loved to cook and entertain friends and family.
Paul served in the Coast Guard Reserves upon graduation from high school and obtained his undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbara and then a Master of Education from University of Nevada – Reno. He taught Spanish for 14 years at Sparks High School in Nevada and at Parker School in Kamuela, HI. Later in life he was a substitute teacher in the Park City school system.
Preceded in death by his father, Daniel Norman Herwit and survived by his mother Grace Herwit, his sister, Judy Friedman, brother-in-law Hank Friedman, ex-wife Donna Terry and her husband Tom Terry III, his son Andrew C Herwit and his family, wife Christine and children Max, Madeleine and Nicholas, son Se’an Herwit and his child Tabitha Herwit, daughter Christie Johnson and her children Patrick and Olivia, Nephew Joshua Levine and wife Linh and grandniece Sasha and grandnephew Xavier, Nephew David Levine and wife LaReine and her daughters Bella and Sofia as well as his grandnephews Blake and Casey.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 210 So. Chapel Street, Layton, Utah. Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. A Vigil with Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Interment, Croydon Cemetery in Morgan, Utah.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that a donation be made to the American Cancer Society.
