Hanaye F. Yamashita
SOUTH OGDEN – Hanaye Fukuda Yamashita, 88, passed away on New Years Day, January 1, 2009 of causes incident to age.
She was born January 26, 1920 in Wapato, Washington a daughter of Shizu and Otojiro Fukuda. She lived in Wapato until the war with Japan broke out and was then moved to Utah.
On March 22, 1947, Hanaye married George Yamashita in Ogden, Utah. For years she and George ran a grocery store in Ogden and they met many wonderful friends there. He passed away November 23, 1991. She was one of the hardest working women around. She kept an immaculate home and yard, and then she would go to work at the store.
She was an avid gardener and loved to share her produce with her family and neighbors. She loved to sew and created many beautiful clothes and quilts. She made many clothes for her children, husband, and grandchildren, as well as all of her own clothes. Hanaye was an excellent cook and made many amazing family meals. Her specialty was the traditional new years day dinner that she lovingly made each new years day.
Hanaye loved babies. Anytime she saw a baby it made her happy. Even towards the latter part of her life, a baby would bring the biggest smile to her face. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and we will miss her dearly.
Hanaye is survived by her four boys, Ronald (Kathy) Yamashita, Phoenix, AZ; Gerald (Christine deceased) Yamashita, Phoenix, AZ; Steven (Tracie) Yamashita, South Weber; David (Janet) Yamashita, West Jordan; 10 grandchildren, seven and a half great-grandchildren, three brothers, Takeo Fukuda, Toppenish, WA; Kazuko Fukuda, Ogden; Masao Fukuda, Riverdale; and one sister, Kiyo Morishita, Bountiful.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, a sister Haruyo Sase and a great-grandson Tanner Yamashita Conover.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., with Bishop James R. Losee officiating.
Friends may call at the mortuary on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
