H. Kent Forbes

1935 ~ 2013

Our loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away on January 29, 2013. He was born on September 8, 1935 to Ray John and Ada Irene Peek Forbes in Layton, Utah. He married Melanie Rich on June 28, 1958 in the Logan Temple. They had four children from this marriage.

Kent graduated from Davis High School in 1954 and continued his education at Utah State University where he earned a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Engineering. He worked for Hill Air Force Base, Thiokol and retired from L-3 Communications in 2004. He especially enjoyed working on the Space Shuttle while at Thiokol. He enjoyed doing structural analysis. He worked on supporting the Titan IV Rocket launches and was always interested in learning new topics in mechanical engineering and physics.

He was active in his community and served on the East Layton City Council before being elected as Mayor in 1977. He loved the town of East Layton where his grandfather Forbes settled and farmed. He grew up riding his horses with his friends and sleeping overnight in the mountains. He loved the feel of the open country that existed in his early years.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a testimony of the gospel and love for Heavenly Father. He held many positions in the church and loved working with the youth. He had a great sense of humor and was always joking with others.

After retirement he liked working in the yard and tinkering with his restored 1970 Cadillac, pulling it out of the garage, washing and polishing it, and then pulling it back into the garage. Outer space was very exciting to him. He loved to read books about the galaxy. He was a science fiction fan. He loved classical music.

His children and grandchildren were very precious to him. He was very proud of their scholastic accomplishments and took great joy and pleasure in playing with them and attending their sporting events. He loved to have them crawl on him while he sat on the floor next to them. He was a great grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Stephanie, his son Cody and his daughter Sandy. He is survived by his wife Melanie, his daughter Penny (Kevin) Teuscher and a granddaughter, Angela and four grandsons; David, Michael, James and Spencer and a sister, Sherma and a niece, Jerri and a nephew, Mike.

We would like to give a special thanks to all the doctors and nurses for the constant care and kindness they showed to Kent while he was in ICU at McKay-Dee Hospital.
