Harold Albert Ekstrom Jr. (Bert)
July 18, 1947 ~ February 26, 2017
North Ogden – Harold Albert Ekstrom Jr., 69, passed away at his home with his eternal companion and loving family by his side on February 26, 2017 following a valiant fight with Lewy Body Dementia.
Bert was born in Ogden, Utah on July 18, 1947 to Harold Albert Ekstrom Sr. and Carol June Rapier. He grew up on a small farm in West Layton and later graduated from Davis High School. He finished his studies at Weber State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology. Bert was raised an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and joyfully served in various capacities throughout his life. He also was an avid reader of Church History and had a very strong testimony.
On November 19, 1975, Bert married the love of his life and sweetheart Carolynn (Lynn) Sherfy. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple for time and all eternity.
Bert pridefully served our country in the United State Air Force during the Vietnam War. He continued to serve our country by joining the Air Force Reserves for an additional 16 years. Following many years of enlisted and civilian contractor work at Hill A.F.B., he was able to proudly retire in 2011.
Bert loved everything about the outdoors including riding ATV’s, camping in the Uintahs, target shooting, and fishing. Every summer he took great pride in growing a spectacular vegetable garden and was known for keeping a beautiful yard. His love and compassion was apparent through the many years he spent caring for his hobby farms and beloved pets. He enjoyed “tinkering” around with things in his shop and could fix anything you put in front of him. He was always known as a very hard worker, valued honesty, and would give anyone the shirt off his back.
Bert is survived by his Eternal Companion, Lynn; one son, John Ekstrom, Farr West; three daughters, Tammy (Richard) Marinaro, North Ogden; Melissa Ekstrom, North Ogden; and Kristi (Daniel) Gelwix of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Bert also had five grandchildren, Samantha Burton, Trevin Lopez, Kieri Ekstrom, Price Gelwix, and John Joseph Gelwix. He is also survived by his brothers, Tom (Del) Ekstrom and Bill (Kim) Ekstrom, his sister, Dorothy Ekstrom; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Albert Ekstrom Sr.; his mother, Carol June Rapier; and his brother-in-law, Mike Hatch.
Bert will be eternally grateful for the exceptional care given by his wife and family during these last few months. The family also would also like to recognize and thank Hearts for Hospice for their loving care during this difficult time.
