Harry Pledger

July 20, 1919 ~ October 18, 2017

Harry Pledger passed away peacefully October 18, 2017 surrounded by those he loved and who loved him. He was 98 years old. It was a gentle end to a full life well lived. Harry was born on July 20, 1919 in Acequia, Idaho to Harry W. and Mazy Mathews Pledger. He received his formal education in the Ogden City Schools but gained further lessons in the school of hard knocks that he shared with his children and posterity so that they didn’t need to learn them on their own.

He was a Corporal with the K Battery, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine division serving in the Pacific during World War II.  He was proud to have served his country and maintained his ramrod military posture all his life. His grandchildren loved to hear his war stories and he loved to tell them.

He married Beth Mayfield June 11, 1938.  They were later divorced.

He married Ruth Elaine Williams March 18, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Harry was a hard worker. He worked for the Utah Oil and Refining Company, the Ogden Iron Works, and the Western Steel Company. His last full-time job was with the Ogden Defense Depot, from which he retired in 1986.

Harry loved to travel with Ruth and together they saw all 50 states along with Russia and much of Europe. He also loved to garden. The rows were absolutely straight and you couldn’t find a weed if you tried. He was always happy to share the fruits of his toil with others. The yard around his home was always beautiful.

He was an active member of the LDS Church and did not hesitate to cross the border to do work in the Juarez Mexico Temple while they were living in El Paso.

Harry is survived by his wife, Ruth; and his children, Stephen (Dixie) Kirkwood, Payson UT; Sally (Dave) Stubbs, Hillsdale, UT; Brian (Renee) Pledger, El Paso, TX; Debbie (Eldon) Barnes, Pleasant View, UT; Joseph (Marcy) Pledger, Payson, UT; Ruth (Greg) Rowley, Providence, UT; and Beckie Pledger, Ogden, UT; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sisters, Alma Brough, AL and Jean (Ezra) Hadley, Ogden, UT.

He was preceded in death by his two sons, Leo and Dean, and a daughter, Kathleen Park.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the Farr West 3rd Ward Chapel, 1745 North 2300 West. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at the church.
