HARRY EDWARD SPEAR, JR.
Harry passed away peacefully from natural causes on May 2, 2015, in Bountiful, Utah. He was born in Eastport, Maine to Harry E. and Edna (Tucker). Born weighing 16 lbs., he held the record for the largest baby in the Guinness World Book of records for a short time. Throughout his life, he was built like a stone wall with hands that could easily crush those of most people. He was a big teddy bear. He worked hard and could fix almost anything!
Harry served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion throughout his life. He was proud to be an American. He was a member of the UAW and often commented on how the Union had saved him and treated him right.
Harry relocated to Staten Island, NY, in his late teens where he met and married love of his life, Carol.
They were married for 58 years. Dad was a nomad and moved many times. They settled in Tulsa, OK and lived there for 30 years. He proudly retired from the Ford Glass Plant. After retiring, he moved to Tucson, AZ and Utah.
Harry retained his Maine accent throughout his life along with his love of the ocean. He loved seafood in general, especially clams and clam chowder. His favorite dessert also originated in New England, Boston Cream Pie.
Harry was an avid reader. He read every line in the daily newspaper, as well as watching television news. He was informed and opinionated and people generally steered clear of discussions with Harry relating to politics unless they were prepared to engage in a Battle Royale. The uninformed did not stand a chance.
He was preceded in death by wife, Carol Lee McKinney, and son, Timothy. He is survived by daughter Gail Collins (Rick) of Layton, UT; son Robert of Tulsa, OK; and sisters Joyce Perry Wolfert of Jacksonville, FL, and Kay Whitcomb (Walt) of Spanaway, WA.
Harry had 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He joined Gail’s family, children, and grandchildren every Sunday for dinner for many years. Family was everything to him.
A memorial service will be at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road, Layton, UT, on Thursday, May 7, at 4:00 p.m., followed by interment.
