Harry Oliver Wood
December 7, 1933 ~ August 24, 2018
On August 24, 2018, Harry Oliver Wood set sail on a voyage to his final port of call.
Harry Oliver Wood, 84, was born on December 7, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Roland and Elsie Beck Wood. He was the youngest of four children, including his sister, Roberta and brothers, Bud and Clarence.
He married the love of his life, Joyce Marie Bauman, in January 1963. They met while writing back and forth to each other as “pen pals.” Joyce was living in Ogden and Harry was overseas in the U.S. Navy. They forged a friendship through their letters to each other and eventually fell in love and were soon married. They made their home in Ogden and were blessed with two children, Katherine and Brian.
Harry joined the navy in Washington, D.C. when he was just 15 years old. He served on several ships in the navy, including the Turner Joy. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received many medals of honor. He was honorably discharged and retired after 30 years of service with the United States Navy. He loved the navy, was the epitome of a crusty old sailor, and truly felt it an honor and privilege to protect America. After retiring from the navy, Harry worked as a diesel mechanic. He loved working on engines and the great people he worked with during this second career in life.
Perhaps his greatest and most favorite role was that of “Papa.” He loved spending time with his four grandchildren: Brittany, Jacob, Matthew, and Gabrielle. They had many adventures together and a strong and loving bond. Papa’s blessings continue with a great-grandson, Hayden, and a new baby girl, Luna, who will be born in December.
Harry was a wonderful husband, father, brother, son, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Marie; children: Katherine (Randy) Hutchinson and Brian Wood; grandchildren: Brittany, Jacob (Haley), Matthew (Heather), Gabrielle; great-grandchildren: Hayden and Luna.
The family would like to thank the following medical professionals for their loving and compassionate care: Dr. J.L. Stayner, Hospitalist at McKay Dee Hospital; IMC and Medical/Oncology Nursing Units at McKay Dee Hospital; and Inspiration Hospice.
Friends may visit with family on Monday, August 27, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Private graveside services will be performed at a later date. Interment, Ogden Cemetery.
