Hazel Elaine Barnes
Clearfield a" Hazel Elaine Barnes, a loving mother and grandmother passed away on March 31, 2009 at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah.
Hazel was born on October 31, 1924 to Gustave Edgar and Laura Bowen Sandstrom in Salt Lake City, Utah. She married Ferman Merle Barnes on January 15, 1949 in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Oakland Temple on April 16, 1968.
In her own words she was a blonde with curly hair and blue eyes who loved to sing and lead music. She grew up in humble surroundings but she had good parents and a happy home with brothers and sisters.
Hazel began work after graduating from Granite High School at a "dime" store. She later worked for a dentist carving teeth, in an arms plant packing machine gun belts, and various stores as a clerk finally ending up at the customer service desk at K-Mart. She did what jobs she could to support her family and her sons on missions.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a long history as Ward Chorister, and Choir Director. Even in her sunset years she led the music at services at Apple Village Assisted Living.
Hazel is survived by her sons Michael (Marlene), Ogden; Richard (Debbie), Syracuse; Mark (Marilyn), Clinton; two brothers Clayne and LeRoy Sandstrom, 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother, husband and one son Frank M. Barnes.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 11a.m. at the Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Clearfield City Cemetery.
