Helen Graham
Helen Graham, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010.
She was born on September 9, 1918 to Lewis C. and Lila E. Mathews. Helen was the oldest of five children; three brothers and one sister. Her early childhood years were spent on a ranch in Grays Lake, Idaho where her father worked on the Caribou National Forest as a ranger and rancher.
As a young girl she was always very active and loved the outdoors, riding horses, and hiking. She often said she would much rather be outside rounding up the cattle with the boys than inside cooking with the girls. She attended Provo High School and college at Utah State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.
After teaching in a one room school house for one year, she took a job teaching in Alaska, but due to the War, she decided to stay in Prince Rupert, BC Canada with the family of a woman she met on the ship. It was there that she met and married Eldin Carl Graham who was stationed there in the U.S. Army. Together they had four children. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple in 1980. Eldin passed away in 1981. Helen was a wonderful teacher and touched the lives of many a 3rd grade student attending Kaysville Elementary. She taught for the Davis County School District for over 20 years. Hers was a life of giving service to others. Many of her grandchildren think of her as a wise and wonderful teacher and a “best friend.”
Helen loved her family, playing with grandchildren, making crafts, and eating chocolate. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions.
Helen is survived by her children: Judi (Steve) Chapman, Michael (Bev) Graham, William (Johanna) Graham, Kathie (Michael) Shaw, sister Janet Higham, brother William Mathews, 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two younger brothers.
Funeral services will be Monday, February 8, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
