Helen N. Wallace
EDEN – Helen Norrine Wallace died peacefully on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Ogden Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.
She was born October 21, 1933 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, a daughter of Joseph and Kathleen Burke Nichols.
Her early years were spent in East Boston, MA where she attended Saint Mary’s Catholic Elementary School and Holy Redeemer Catholic High School. In 1953 she met Edwin R. Wallace who was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte. They were married on July 11, 1954 in the Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Sommerville, MA. .
She lived in Dallas TX from 1954 until 1956 while her husband attended college. In 1957 her husband returned to the Navy and Helen spent the next 27 years traveling throughout the United States and overseas with her family. She lived in Morocco, North Africa and later in Japan. Duty assignments of her husband took her to the Washington D.C. area and New England. Later she lived in Washington State and California. In 1978 she moved to Ogden, UT. In 1984 when her husband retired from the Navy they settled in Eden, UT.
While traveling she still found time to raise a family and work in numerous positions throughout the country. These included the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, Executive Assistant to the Manager, Springfield Mall, Springfield, VA and Assistant to the President of the Ogden-Weber Chamber Commerce. While in Japan she served as President of the Japanese/American Officers Wives Club in Sasebo, Japan. Helen was active in the Officers Wives Club of the Former Defense Depot Ogden. She was a founding member of Saint Florence Catholic Church in Huntsville, UT.
Helen is survived by her husband Captain Edwin Wallace, USN(Ret), daughters, Vicki Lynn (Doug) Hill, Susan Kay (Michael) Hoffman, Julie Ann (Thomas) Wolf, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her brother Paul Nichols of Winthrop, MA; and her sister Kathleen Fallon of Cleveland, OH.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one infant daughter, Amy Marie.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Florence Catholic Church, 6461 E. Highway 39 in Huntsville.
Family will meet with friends at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. where Holy Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
