Helen Velete Moulton Wise

June 14, 1927 ~ October 5, 2014

After a long and full life, Helen Velete Moulton Wise passed away peacefully on a beautiful autumn Sunday, October 5, 2014.

Helen was born on June 14, 1927 in Wyoming, the daughter of Thomas Alma Moulton and Lucile Blanchard. She lived her youth in the shadows of the Teton Mountains on “Mormon Row”, near Jackson Hole.  She had five brothers and sisters.  In the winter, when the family home was inaccessible, she attended school in town and lived with Jean Dake, a woman who treated her like a daughter.

In 1949, Helen graduated from Utah State University in Home Economics.  She married Wallace “Wally” Keith Wise on June 30, 1953 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.  While he served in Korea, she taught home economics in Driggs, Idaho.  When he returned, he was stationed in Clovis, New Mexico, where they enjoyed living from 1963-69.

Helen and Wally had three children, Carey, Bryan, and Lucile. The family eventually relocated to the Lorin Farr area of Ogden where Helen lived until her death.

Helen was a loving, kind, hard-working woman.  She taught home economics at Mound Fort Jr. High for six years.  For five years she owned a wedding decorating and catering business.  After her husband’s death in 1986, she worked in the J.C. Penney drapery department until retirement.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life, Helen served in many callings, including as a church history missionary in Salt Lake City from 1993-94.  The mission instilled in her a love for family history.  After her mission, she compiled pictures, stories, history books and volunteered at the Family History Center in Ogden.

Helen was a beautiful seamstress and quilter.  She taught many children in the neighborhood, offering sewing lessons in her basement.  In 1996, she organized a group of volunteers who met each Tuesday at McKay-Dee Hospital to make quilts, the proceeds of which were donated to the hospital.  The day before recent breast cancer surgery, Helen was at the hospital organizing the quilting room.  She donated thousands of hours of her time to that labor she loved.  She was also active in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

Helen’s family is thankful for her long life and for her peaceful passing.  She will be greatly missed.  She is now in the company of her husband Wally, and son Bryan who preceded her in death.

Helen is survived by her son Carey and his wife Teresa Turley, daughter Lucile and her husband Craig Browne, and daughter-in-law Marilyn Barlow Wise Greenwood.  Helen had nine grandchildren.  Her eighth great-grandchild was born on the day of her death.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Garland Cemetery at 3 p.m.
