Henrietta Oberlander Thomas
April 17, 1922 ~ March 5, 2015
Our loving mother, Henrietta Oberlander Thomas, 92, of South Ogden, Utah, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2015. Henrietta was born April 17, 1922 in Nixa, Missouri, grew up in Springfield, Missouri and graduated from Springfield High School in 1940. Henrietta attended nurses training at the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, Kansas City, Missouri from 1941 to 1944. After graduating she was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corp where she served for over two years. Fifteen months of that service was spent overseas, six months on Saipan in the Mariana Islands and nine months at the Old Tripler Hospital in Honolulu.
While stationed in Honolulu, she met her husband, Thayne L. Thomas of Spanish Fork, Utah. They were married on May 15, 1947 in Richmond, California. In September of 1984 their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. Thayne preceded her in death on July 6, 1996.
Thayne made the US Air Force his career, retiring in April of 1965. During his career they lived in various parts of the US and for two years in Ankara Turkey. Upon his retirement they moved to Ogden and finally settled in South Weber. In October of 2001, Henrietta moved to the Mountain Ridge Assisted Living Center in South Ogden.
Henrietta joined the LDS Church in 1960 in Spokane, Washington. She fulfilled callings in the YWMMIA and in Relief Society. She served in three different Relief Society Presidencies, where she taught the Home Making and Social Relations lessons. She served as a Visiting Teacher for 20 years and in the German Extraction Program for ten years.
Besides her military nursing, Henrietta did both private and general duty nursing and volunteer work for The American Red Cross teaching home nursing lessons. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader for five years and a Den Mother for ten. Henrietta also served on numerous PTA Committees, as an adult leader of the South Weber Junior Posse for five years, and as President of the Mountain Ridge Residents Association.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons, Laura Jeanne (Richard) Doty, Springdale; Beverly Ann (Michael) Clark, South Weber; Thayne L. (Karen) Thomas, Jr., Oakley, CA; Grant A. (Karen) Thomas, Sandy; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Henrietta and her children want to express their gratitude for the nurses and care givers at Mountain Ridge Assisted Living and Hospice for Utah who took care of her over the years and during her final days.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. The family will meet with friends Wednesday, March 11th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
