Henry Boyd Ames

August 10, 1922 ~ March 24, 2017

Henry Boyd Ames passed away on March 24, 2017 at McKay Dee Hospital with his loving and devoted wife and daughter by his side.  Boyd was born on August 10, 1922 in Logan, Utah to Ira B. and Mae (Worley) Ames.  He was the second of four children, with siblings Shirley, Blaine, and Daryl.  At age seven his family moved to Ogden where he attended Ogden public schools and graduated from Ogden High School in 1941.  In 1942 he was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Douglas and went on to serve his country admirably through the duration of World War II as a first sergeant in the Asiatic Pacific and the Island of Saipan where he received numerous decorations and citations for service including the medal of victory.

Boyd continually sought out ways to serve his country and community and so when he returned from service, while attending Weber State College, he began working for the Department of Defense at the Ogden Arsenal where he remained as chief of the management analysis branch until its closure in 1954.  He subsequently transferred to the Army Defense Depot Ogden where he held management positions including Deputy Director of Installation Services until his retirement in 1981.

Retirement didn’t suit him well and so in 1986 he found a new source of service to his community by joining the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.   Here he served as bailiff for his dearest friend, the Honorable Ronald O. Hyde, until the judge’s retirement and then as bailiff to the Honorable Michael D. Lyon.  During his eleven years of service here Boyd greatly enjoyed his daily lunches with his friend and even more so the pleasure of watching his daughter represent clients before the court.

Shortly after returning from World War II, Boyd renewed his friendship with the woman who would become the love of his life, Dortha Sitterud, and on September 27, 1947, they were married in Huntington, Utah, in Dortha’s family home.  To all who know and love them it has been Boyd and Dottie, Dottie and Boyd for over 69 wonderful years.  In 1968 the couple were blessed with their only child Stephanie who has always been their pride and joy.  The three were often inseparable and have enjoyed many years of family activities from skiing and traveling to attending Stephanie’s various performances and competitions.

Second only to his love of family was Boyd’s love of the water.  His greatest source of pleasure was spending time with his family and friends boating; whether at Lake Powell, Flaming George or Ogden Pineview Reservoir.  A member of the Ogden Pineview Yacht Club since 1954, Boyd was actively involved with the formation and expansion of the club serving on the Board of Directors for over 30 years, as well as the offices of Finance Officer, Club Vice Commodore, Secretary/Treasurer and many years as Club Commodore.  His family would like to give special recognition and say thank you to the Fife family nephews and the Dennis Petersen family for transporting and maintaining the “Stephanie” for years when Boyd could no longer do so himself so that he and his wife could continue spending time on the water.

Boyd was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a thirty year member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, please commemorate Boyd’s love of community and donate to your charity of choice.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.
