HENRY NORMAN HAYES
1924-2021
Henry Norman Hayes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and true friend, peacefully passed away at home in Bountiful, Utah on March 3, 2021 when his huge, wonderful, kind heart just couldn’t beat anymore. He lived an amazing, full life and just missed reaching the age of 97, by 16 days.
Norman was born March 19, 1924 on his parent’s dining room table in Hollywood, California. Grant E. Hayes and Lena Black Hayes had a total of 4 children with Norm being the second oldest. Early in his childhood the family moved to Ogden Utah. When Grant was offered a great opportunity in Salt Lake to work with Studebaker Automobiles, the family moved. Norm finished his schooling in Salt Lake at Irving Jr. High and East High School. During WWII, Norman was a Naval Aviator. He was trained to fly seaplanes on floats as an observation pilot. Norm’s expertise led him to become a Navy flight instructor. WWII ended just before he received his commission, and he chose to return home, where he became involved with his dad with the automobile business.
Norm served an LDS stake mission, attended classes at the University of Utah and married his sweetheart, Faye Bryner in 1946. With some help from his father, Norm was able to start his own car dealership in 1949, named Norman Motor Company in Murray. Norman and Faye (who later divorced) had four delightful children: Heidi, Eric, Julie, and Georgia. Norm was always “the fun Dad” in the neighborhood.
In 1953, Norm and his brother, Jerry, opened a Buick franchise in South Salt Lake, Hayes Brothers Buick, with Norm overseeing sales and Jerry in charge of the service department. In 1957 they added the Jeep franchise and continued in business for nearly 50 years. He served as president of the Utah Automobile Dealers Association in 1963, and was inducted into the Utah Auto Dealers Hall of Fame in 2003. Hayes Bros. received many awards from both Buick and Jeep for the large number of sales and for superior customer service.
Norm met Connie Dyson in the late 1970’s. They developed a story book relationship which culminated in their marriage on March 8, 1985, when Norm helped Connie raise her four young children Heidi, Todd, Brad and Amy who considered him more than a Step Father. Connie and Norm were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 2013. Norman and Connie traveled extensively all over the world during their thirty-six years of marriage. They saw so many amazing places, yet they’d return every year to Norm’s favorite spot, Hawaii. The Hayes Home was always the place for family get-togethers, dinners, reunions and festive Christmases spent with kids and grandkids. All of Norm and Connie’s eight children loved and adored him.
Norm was a true gentleman with a sparkle and upbeat spunk that charmed anyone he met. A very sincere, patient, humble yet tenacious man, he would go all out to solve any type of problem or mystery. A plaque on his desk read “Just Do It Now”. And he did! He would drop anything he was doing to help someone in need. Norm was known for his quick wit, easy banter, great smile and cheerful personality, even up to his last breath. Norm had many hobbies and interests through-out his lifetime including car racing, riding dirt bikes, golfing, skiing, water skiing, tinkering with engines and visiting the wonderful Hayes family cabin at Fish Lake, Utah. He enjoyed sharing these interests with as many people as he could.
Norman is survived by his loving wife, Connie; his four children, Heidi Jacobs (Jeff) Rye, NY; Eric Hayes (Megan) SLC, UT; Julie Hayes Granite, UT and Georgia Anderson (Chris) Park City, UT. Along with 4 stepchildren; Todd Dyson (Julie) Bountiful, UT; Heidi Bishop, SLC, UT; Brad Dyson (Brooke) Bountiful, UT; and Amy Jacobson (Brian), Naples, FL; Norm and Connie’s 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; brothers Jerry and Phil.
