KAYSVILLE - Herbert Greyson McCarty, 95, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013.

Herbert was born on June 4, 1918 in Garden Valley, Georgia to Charlie C. and Henrietta P. McCarty.

His mother passed away during the Flu Epidemic of 1918 when he was 5 months old. He was a child of the Great Depression, working to support himself at a very early age. He had to leave school to work in the cotton fields until age 17 when he joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). For the remainder of his life, he claimed that nothing else was work after working in the cotton fields.

While in the CCC, he was transferred to Milford, Utah where he met his "Darling" Betty Denny. They were married in 1940 and were later sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple. She died in 1996 from the effects of a stroke that had left her incapacitated for 16 years. He cared lovingly for her during that time.

He was a Federal Employee for 32 years at Hill AFB which included 22 months of US Navy Service during WWII. He retired in 1974.

He was a volunteer for many years at McKay-Dee hospital, Davis Medical Center, and St. George Hospital.

He also volunteered many years with the Meals on Wheels program in Kaysville and in St. George.

He, along with several other men in the community, started the little league baseball program in Kaysville. He served as a coach for several years and as an umpire as well. He also helped organize the youth basketball program in Kaysville.

He received numerous certificates citing his many hours of community service which he enjoyed and considered an honor to render.

He was baptized a member of the LDS Church in 1980 and from that time he served in various church callings. He served as the Stake Coordinator for Deseret Industries and the Blood Drive for 15 years. He was a blood donor until age 85.

He served as a Member Locator Missionary in Salt Lake City and St. George for over 12 years, serving until the time of his death. He attended several mornings a week at the St. George Temple.

He was known for his devoted service, his sense of humor, and his love of family. He was a great athlete in his youth and was an avid golfer until age 93.

He was an example of independence, optimism, integrity, loyalty, and enduring courageously to the end.

Herbert is survived by his children Lynetta (Jim) Cottrell, Linda Cottrell, Gary (Jeanette) McCarty, 11 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers and one sister.
