Herbert Edwin Strand 1916 ~ 2007
Our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 10, 2007.
Herbert was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 11, 1916 to Karl Gustaf Strand and Judith Elizabeth Persson Andersson. He was one of seven children in his family.
As a young boy he lived in Sweden and later moved back to Utah where he graduated from Granite High School and attended the University of Utah.
He was a pilot, mechanic, and a Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Air Force.
He married his sweetheart, Thelma Christiansen on April 11, 1957 in England; they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They''ve shared a wonderful life together full of love, laughter, and lots of traveling.
Herb enjoyed gardening, square dancing, music, traveling, and anything to do with airplanes, flying was his passion.
He was an active member of the LDS Church and held various callings throughout his life; he served for many years in the Boy Scouts of America, and loved it. He was an active member of the Layton J.C.''s committee, and was the secretary of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Herb volunteered at the Layton Museum and spent more than fifteen years volunteering at the Hill Aerospace Museum at HAFB.
Herb will be remembered most for his generous heart, the twinkle in his eye, his lightheartedness, Swedish pancakes, his strong work ethic, and dancing the Fox-Trot with his granddaughters.
Herb will be loved and missed by all who knew him; he had much to offer this world and his influence and example for good will never be forgotten.
Herb is survived by his wife Thelma, his children and their spouses Roger (Claire) and Karla Hansen (Korey), 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his sister Thelma, and his brother Elmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.
Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road, where military honors will be accorded by the HAFB Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Hill Aerospace Museum at Hill Air Force Base.
