Himeyo Mukai Kariya

Himeyo Mukai Kariya age 92, passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side on June 22, 2013 in Ogden, Utah. "Mey", was born August 2, 1920 in Ogden to Tono and Kenjiro "Kay" Mukai. Mey graduated early from Ogden High School and at the age of 16 started keeping books for Kenjiro''s restaurant, Kay''s Noodle Parlor. She acquired the noodle parlor when Kenjiro retired, and owned and operated it for nearly 40 years until her own retirement in 1984. She was on a first name basis with most of her customers, and often ordered their favorite meals for them as they walked in. She continued the tradition of serving fresh, hot meals and was famous for her steaming bowls of noodle soups.

In 1947, she married Tom Kariya, later divorced, and together were the parents of three sons, Thomas, Richard, and Robert (Sandy). She has four grandchildren and two great- grandchildren: Kiersten (Jared Nielsen), great-grandchildren Caleb and Asher, Cottonwood Heights; Bryan (Samantha), Edmond, OK; Casey, and Joshua, Kaysville.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in the Burch Creek 6th Ward. One of her favorite callings was Single Adult Leader, which she magnified with charity, diligence, kindness and love. She often catered meals for her SA activities with recipes from her restaurant. She continued to visit the members of her group at home or in care facilities years after her calling ended.

Mey is survived by her sisters, Dorothy (Hashimoto) and Peggy (Shimizu). She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert; sisters, Michiyo (Teraji) and Itomi (Ushio), and brother, Gerrold.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the Burch Creek 6th Ward, 3680 Eccles Ave., Ogden. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Ogden and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church.
