Horacio G. Macias

February 18, 1944 ~ December 8, 2014

Horacio G. Macias, 70, passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, December 8, 2014 in San Diego, CA after a 20 year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born on February 18, 1944 in Guadalajara, Mexico to Amado and Margarita Gomez Macias. He was raised in Chula Vista, CA and served in the Army as an Airborne paratrooper during the Vietnam War. During his time in the Army he received multiple medals for his service, including the Soldier’s Medal for heroism.

He married Margarita Topete and they moved to Ogden, Utah where they raised six strong-willed children. Horacio enjoyed camping with his family, snowmobiling and was an avid hunter. He worked for Browning as a plant manager for more than 30 years. After retirement, he moved back to his California hometown where he enjoyed the warmer weather, working on home improvement projects and gardening. He taught his kids the importance of faith, family and hard-work. He was a well-respected man of principle. Many would go to him seeking his wisdom and advice. He was a constant reminder to never give up and to “keep fighting.”  His many lessons and metaphors will be missed.

Horacio is survived by his wife Margarita Topete Macias, Riverdale, UT; children, Horace (Kathy) Macias, Plain City, UT; David Macias, Ogden, UT; Danny Macias, Bend, OR; Veronica Macias, Glencoe, IL; Rebecca Macias, Riverdale, UT; Mary Macias, Riverdale, UT; Carmen Bay, Cotati, CA; and Margaret Maytas, Austintown, OH; two grandchildren; and siblings, Amado Macias, Roy Macias, Sergio Macias, Ernie Macias, Lewis Macias, Socorro Betanzos, Gema Ruelas and Bertha Anderson.
