In 1942, Howard joined the Army Air Corp and served in World War II as a P-51 fighter pilot for General George S. Patton. As part of the 354th Fighter Squadron, he escorted bombers across the English Channel and was involved in many combat missions over Belgium, France, and Germany. During the invasion of Omaha Beach, a few days after D-Day, he met General Dwight D. Eisenhower and helped plan the location of landing strips in France.
