Howard Stoddard

June 23, 1926 — May 7, 2019

US Army Veteran, Postmaster, Mayor, Civil Leader.  Howard passed away in Layton, Utah on May 7, 2019.

Howard was born June 23, 1926 to Louis M and Lillie Flint Stoddard in West Point, Utah.  Howard was married to Jennie Widdison on August 22, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple.  Jennie passed away January 1, 2002 in Layton, Utah.  On August 2, 2002, he was married to Anne G Russell in the Ogden Temple.

Howard served his country at Fort Knox, KY; Okinawa Island and Seoul, Korea in World War II.  He worked at the Naval Supply Depot and transferred to the US Postal Service as a mail carrier and advanced to the position of Postmaster of the Clearfield Post Office, retiring September 2, 1983.  He was appointed to West Point City, serving on the Planning Commission for 4 years, City Council for 12 years and was the last full time Mayor/Manager for 8 years.  Howard was Civic minded, having served as President of the West Point Jr. Chamber of Commerce.  He was a member of the Kiwanis for 50 years.  He enjoyed being a season ticket holder of basketball for the University of Utah for 65 years beginning in 1948.  Howard has served in many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked as a temple worker in the Ogden Temple before it closed for renovation in 2011.  Howard served on the West Point Veterans Memorial Monument committee as Chairman with approximately 20 other members recognizing over 360 veterans.  In all of his assignments, he was blessed to have worked with many good people whom he appreciated.

Surviving are his loving wife, Anne G Stoddard, Brent W (Kathleen) Stoddard, Leslie Duersch, Sharon (Michael) Richey  all of West Point and sister, Alta S Earl of St. George.  Other family members are Carl (Cindy) Hurst of Layton, Susan (Frank) Nicotra, Florida Douglas (Pam) Hurst of Syracuse and Jody (Chris) Daniel of Idaho, 24 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by Irene S. Flint, sister, Karen S Duersch and Donna Solomon, daughters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the Lakeside Stake Center, 855 N. 4000 W., West Point, Utah.  Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church.

Interment, West Point City Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
