Hugh “Bud” Darrow Bohlender

Hugh “Bud” Darrow Bohlender, 69, passed peacefully in his home, on August 7, 2021, after a very long and valiant battle with cancer. Bud was born in Sacramento, California on October 27, 1951 to Hugh S. Bohlender and Dorothy E. (Darrow) Bohlender. Bud is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ingrid E. (Rieck) Bohlender, his son, Philip (Joelle) Bohlender and their seven children; his son-in-law, Jessik (Karen, deceased) Weeks and their three children; his step-daughter, Elizabeth (Daniel, deceased) Ruiz and their two children; his step-son, Robert (Lisa) Grover and their three children; his sister, Mary Gale (Earl, deceased) Beyer; his sister, Bonnie Ann (Dave, deceased) Watkins; and, many loving nieces and nephews.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and his precious daughter, Karen Leslie (Bohlender) Weeks. Karen’s funeral was held on August 7, 2021, the same day Bud joined her in eternal rest.

Bud grew up in Sacramento, California and graduated from Norte Del Rio High School in 1969. In June of 1969, Bud accepted his appointment at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. After graduation in 1973, Bud was commissioned in Armor branch, survived Ranger school, and served with the 3d Armor Cavalry Regiment while it was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas and the 2d Armor Cavalry while it was stationed in the Hof Corridor in Germany. Bud resigned his commission in 1981 to attend graduate school and law school at Northwestern University. He joined a large law firm in Chicago and subsequently became an attorney for Allstate Insurance Company. It is there that he met his best friend and soulmate, Ingrid. Bud and Ingrid married in 1997, and since then, have been blessed with 15 grandchildren, with whom they spent as much time as possible.

After retiring from Allstate, Bud and Ingrid moved to Utah so they could be closer to their children and grandchildren. In his younger days, Bud enjoyed photography, running, biking, and was always up for a good debate. He loved books and was an avid reader and writer of military history, battles and World War I. He leaves behind a very impressive library for his family to enjoy. Bud loved music and going to concerts, he loved to travel, he loved watching football (Chicago Bears and the Army/Navy game, always his favorites), he loved to cook (especially on the grill), and as his grandkids will tell you, he loved Disney. But most of all, Bud loved spending time with his family.

Bud was a blessing and the heart and soul of his family. They feel honored to forever call him husband, Dad, and Papa Bear. Their hearts are broken, but as they heal and get stronger, he will be carried within each of them forever.

“And when our work is done, Our course on earth is run, May it be said, “Well done” BE THOU AT PEACE.”

Ingrid would like to give her heartfelt thanks to each and every one of her neighbors who called, texted, cooked, dropped off little surprises and delicious home-made bread, shoveled their snow, and helped bring Bud into the house when he came home from the hospital. Knowing you were there on a moment’s notice, was more comforting than you’ll ever know. Everyone has given more love, care, and support than we could have ever imagined. Without each of you, our challenging cancer journey would have been impossible.

And, last but not least, Lier and Sue ... thank you for being such amazing friends; thank you for checking on us (even during Covid); and, most of all, thank you for loving my beautiful boy. Go Army, Beat Navy! (wink-wink, sorry Sue:).

A Memorial Service celebrating Bud’s life will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road, Layton, UT.  Friends may visit with family from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Following the service, there will be a military salute outside the mortuary.
